Leather Toolbag

Leather Toolbag

A leather tool bag made for use in the historic workshop where I conduct my blacksmithing work. Died with home-made vinegaroon and preserved with a mixture of neatsfoot oil, olive oil, and beeswax.

Engraved Sanding Block

Engraved Sanding Block

A test piece and my first attempt to learn engraved wire inlay. Silver wire with a bit of copper at the centre set as inlay into the top surface of a steel bar which is used as a flat, weighted surface to sand blades.

Dréngjvalunnr

Dréngjvalunnr

A puukko forged for a ‘Knife in the Hat’ exchange, in which everyone forges something to a certain theme. For this specific exchange, the restraint was to use only material lying around in the shop and would otherwise probably be discarded as scrap. For this blade, it is forged from other failed projects and cutoffs forge-welded together, a piece of copper bus, and scrap wood and leather.

Mandola

Mandola

Over the course of approximately a year, using a towel folded in half at the foot of my bed for the majority of the workshop and moving twice throughout the process, I built a mandola inspired guitar from scratch. This is the first serious woodworking project I undertook, and having never played the guitar or held one long enough to understand many things I learned through trial and error, the result is an acoustically functional instrument. The goal of the project was to replace the void of music left after 16 years of symphonic, jazz, and swing percussion became difficult to continue with the space constraints of apartment life.

The pattern welded blade of the first sword I ever forged, a three bar construction in which the core is higher layer straight laminate 1095/15n20, band of wrought iron, and an edge of lower layer straight laminate.
